Berlin - Angela Merkel performed a stunning u-turn on her open door migration policy today as she vowed to step up the deportation of failed asylum seekers. In a stark contrast to her controversial pledge to roll out the red carpet to the Middle East last month, the German leader is now insisting “not everyone can stay” in Europe. She made the remarks as she teamed up with Italian PM Matteo Renzi to strike a tough new tone on migration, with the refugee crisis once more threatening to spiral into chaos. The duo announced their crackdown on economic migration hours after the EU unveiled highly controversial proposals to repatriate refugees. Critics in the European Parliament said the plans were against human rights. But European leaders facing crunch elections, which include Mrs Merkel, Mr Renzi and France’s Francois Hollande, are desperate to strike a tougher tone on immigration. Under fire Mrs Merkel said: “Not everyone can stay, and Italy has the same problem, so we have a common agenda. “Those who do not have the right to stay have to be repatriated.” The German leader’s comments, made during a meeting with Mr Renzi, who echoed the sentiment. Speaking in the Italian town of Maranello, home to the Ferrari sports car empire, he said: “All of us in Europe must work for the repatriation of those who do not have rights to stay. “It is unthinkable that we can accommodate everyone.” Under plans announced by Jean-Claude Juncker’s Commission successful asylum seekers would be subjected to constant review, and would be deported if and when their home country was deemed to have become safe again. The proposed law was greeted with outrage by MEPs yesterday, who described it as inhumane and said it would make it impossible for asylum seekers to integrate into European society. Ms Merkel’s comments seem part of a whirlwind of positive and scathing reviews on her own refugee policy. She has already admitted mistakes were made when she opened the doors to more than one million migrants. Yet on the very same day she also said she would continue the policy. Her comments were particularly poignant because they came exactly a year to the day after she first uttered her infamous ‘wir schaffen das’ - we can do this - phrase which has been condemned by German politicians.(FA)
