Amnesty organises global concerts in aid of refugees

Beirut - A concert to demonstrate solidarity with refugees forced to flee their homes to escape bloodshed and persecution was held in Beirut yesterday as part of global activities organised by Amnesty International and Sofar Sounds. The gigs in more than 60 countries bring together established and emerging artists together with refugees and local communities. In Beirut, Lebanese band Mashrou’ Leila played alongside Syrian band Tanjaret Daghet, as well as Chyno, Sand Moon and Jay Wud, in support of Amnesty International’s ‘I Welcome’ campaign for refugees, joining more than 1000 artists performing in 300 shows across the globe. The aim of the concerts is to boost public support for refugees globally. The Beirut concert is against the recent rise in xenophobia and attacks on the refugee community in Lebanon. “Now more than ever we need to show the refugee community that there is public support for their plight. The concert in Beirut is a crucial opportunity for people in Lebanon to stand up for refugee rights and show refugees that they are still welcome here,” said Samah Hadid, Middle East Campaigns Director at Amnesty International in Beirut. The concert aims to showcase the power of music to bring together communities in support of refugees.  “We want to stand in support with all refugees, and particularly those in Lebanon who have fled war in search of safety, to show there is still support for refugee rights” she said.(FA)
