Stockholm - Thousands of illegal immigrants facing deportation from Sweden have reportedly VANISHED from police radars - with the majority thought to STILL be in the country.
A total of 21,748 people are waiting to be sent home from the Scandinavian country after having their asylum applications turned down.
But out of that figure, a whopping 14,140 are said to have slipped through the net, with Swedish police admitting they have no clue where they are.
Registered as either "departed" or "wanted", some are believed to have left the country while a large number are thought to still be hiding out in Sweden.
Patrik Engstrom, head of the national border police, told The Local: “We simply don’t know where they are.
A monthly record of 218,394 migrants and refugees reached Europe by sea in October, the UN says, almost as many as the total number of arrivals in 2014. We take a look at the shocking statistics facing the humanitarian crisis.
Many of the illegal migrants are understood to come from war-torn and African countries including Afghanistan, Iran, Somalia, Eritrea, Lebanon, Morocco and Libya.
But while their whereabouts has sparked mystery for immigration chiefs, it has also led to a number of employers taking advantage by exploiting them as cheap labour with no minimum wage.
The figures came from the National Border Police Section in the National Operations Division.(FA)
