BRUSSELS - DiEM25 stands in firm opposition to the re-election of Donald Trump as President of the United States. His return to power is a stark reminder of the divisions and frustrations felt by millions in the US, many of whom are disillusioned with a political system that has repeatedly failed them. Trump’s victory underscores a deeper crisis in American politics—one not solely driven by Trump himself but by the enduring ineffectiveness and complacency of the Democratic establishment.

Quote by Yanis Varoufakis, DiEM25 co-founder:

"Trump is more than a political catastrophe; he embodies a direct assault on the fundamental rights of women, migrants, and all who dare to resist oppression. He tramples on reproductive freedoms, undermines the dignity of the most vulnerable, and mocks the very concept of justice.
Paradoxically, however, for Europe, Trump might be the necessary shock—a disruptive catalyst that compels us to break our dependency on Washington. True independence for Europe will require precisely such a rupture, forcing us to abandon our role as a vassal of the United States."

For decades, the Democratic Party has neglected the needs of ordinary Americans, offering incremental change and policies that favour the few over the many, instead of genuine solutions to the mounting crises of our time. Their indifference to real reform and their tacit support for injustices abroad, including the on-going genocide in Gaza, have left many Americans feeling abandoned. Rather than standing firmly for peace, freedom and dignity, the Democratic Party leadership has opted for “business as usual,” refusing to address the underlying issues that push people toward reactionary alternatives.

Trump’s re-election marks an intensification of authoritarianism, not just in the United States but globally. His “America First” agenda is a direct threat to multilateralism, climate action, and global solidarity. It is a politics that prioritises corporate profit and nationalist rhetoric over the rights and welfare of ordinary people—both in the United States and beyond. His policies promise nothing but deepening inequality, a retreat from the urgent fight against climate collapse, and an assault on democratic values.

DiEM25 warns of the grim outlook this presidency poses for those fleeing violence and poverty, as Trump’s immigration policies deepen a humanitarian crisis. Meanwhile, his rhetoric around ending conflicts abroad rings hollow as he continues to bolster militarised power and provide unconditional support for Israel’s violent actions in Gaza.

In this critical moment, we call on progressives everywhere to rise together in resistance—not against individual leaders alone but against a broken system that produces them. We cannot respond to Trumpism with more of the same neoliberal policies that sparked this crisis. Instead, we must build a new vision—a movement that transcends borders, that speaks to the neglected, and that offers a credible path toward a just and democratic future.

Trump’s re-election is a profound challenge, but it is also a rallying call. DiEM25 remains committed to mobilising alongside those around the world who reject both authoritarianism and the failed politics of the establishment. Together, we can build the democratic, inclusive, and just society that so many long for.

The world cannot afford to mistake Harris’ election as a real victory for progressive politics. We urge progressives and citizens everywhere not to be pacified by the “lesser evil” but to demand true systemic change. Settling for superficial reforms only sustains the very conditions we must dismantle. Our movement remains committed to genuine democracy, human rights, and global solidarity—values that cannot be selectively applied or sacrificed at the altar of political convenience.

As this new administration takes shape, DiEM25 stands firm in its resolve for radical change. We call upon activists, organisers, and all who champion truth and justice to hold this administration accountable and to push forward a global movement that does not rest until real, transformative change is achieved.
