PARIS - Greenhouse gas emissions of the OECD countries peaked in 2007, then recorded a downward trend falling by 9% in the nine following years and plateaued over the years 2016-19.
This was followed by a near 7% drop of emissions between 2019-20, due to the COVID 19 pandemic and associated reduction in activities.
Emissions in OECD countries are expected to rebound by around 5% in 2021.
Technological innovation for a sustainable ocean economy has stagnated, as the number of patented inventions in this sector halved between 2010 and 2019.
Korea, the United States and Japan are the leading innovators, accounting for 47% of all ocean inventions globally in 2019.
