LONDON - Almost 25% of the planet’s population is exposed to deadly urban heat, a new study has found.
Research published in the peer-reviewed Proceedings of the National Academy of Science journal said the “worrying trend” is being caused by a combination of rising temperatures and growing numbers of people living in urban areas.
Increased city temperatures “increase morbidity and mortality”, said the lead author of the study, adding that “it impacts people’s ability to work, and results in lower economic output”, as well as “exacerbating pre-existing health conditions”.
