Sydney - Fireworks lit up the sky over many cities across the globe as hundreds of thousands gather to usher in the New Year. In Sydney, one of the first cities to see in the new year, thousands of people around the Australia city's famous harbour attended a dazzling firework display.  Hongkong put on its biggest ever display with $1.6m worth of fireworks exploding over Victoria Harbour. In Jakarta, Indonesia, a four-mile highway was closed to traffic for a massive street party and fireworks display.  Revellers in Dubai were treated to the spectacle of fireworks exploding around the Burj Khalifa tower.  Russian capital Moscow was the first of the major European cities to welcome in 2013 with a fireworks display over St Basil's Cathedral in Red Square.  In London, party-goers lined up the Thames to watch the UK captial's fireworks display.  Fireworks also lit up the sky over the Senegalese capital Dakar. Some two million people gathered on Rio de Janeiro's CopaCabana beach for a bonanza 24-tonne firework display.  At the stroke of midnight in New York's Time Square, confetti flooded the air where some one million people had gathered to welcome in the new year.
