BERLIN - A coalition of organiszations has launched a petition demanding the immediate resignation of German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock for her role in enabling Israel’s crimes against humanity and genocide in Gaza. A newly released United Nations Commision Report highlights that “Israel has perpetrated a concerted policy to destroy Gaza’s healthcare system as part of a broader assault on Gaza, committing war crimes and the crime against humanity of extermination with relentless and deliberate attacks on medical personnel and facilities”. These acts have been condemned as part of a broader campaign of extermination and systematic violence against the civilian population.

While international bodies such as the UN- have categorically described Israel’s war crimes in Gaza amounting to extermination and crimes against humanity, Baerbock has continued to provide political and material support for these actions. In a recent statement, she justified the destruction of civilian sites in Gaza, claiming that such locations could lose their protected status—a statement that legal scholars and humanitarian organizations have called a flagrant endorsement of war crimes.

These statements directly conflict with Germany’s obligations under international law. Germany, as a signatory to international treaties, is accountable to the International Court of Justice (ICJ) for its complicity in these violations, especially in light of its ongoing trial at the ICJ for aiding and abbeting war crimes, thus breaching the genocide convention. By ignoring these legal responsibilities and the will of the German public, Baerbock has failed her duty and must resign.

The petition points to Baerbock’s dismissive attitude toward international institutions, such as the International Criminal Court (ICC), ICJ and the United Nations, whose reports document clear violations of international law. Her actions not only make Germany complicit in these atrocities but also undermine the international legal framework designed to protect civilians in times of conflict.

“Annalena Baerbock’s disregard for international law and humanitarian principles is a dangerous precedent. As foreign minister, she has failed her responsibility to uphold international legal obligations and norms that Germany is bound to under international treaties, including those overseen by the ICJ. Her actions not only violate these obligations but also expose Germany to legal accountability for complicity in war crimes and genocide. Her foreign policy decisions have directly contributed to mass suffering and death in Gaza, and her continued presence in office is a stain on Germany’s international reputation. Her statements are outrageous and will serve as a smoking gun proof of her willful ignorance and disregard for civilian life at the ICJ in the case brought against Germany by Nicaragua.” - Johannes Fehr, DiEM25 Germany Operations Coordinator.

The petition demands Baerbock’s immediate resignation for her failure to uphold international law and represent the interests of the German people, who overwhelmingly oppose her foreign policy. The full petition is attached to this release.
