Nigerians ignore calls for ban on Wildlife markets

LAGOS - The sale of wildlife meat continues in Nigeria’s commercial capital, Lagos, despite calls for a ban by the United Nations biodiversity programme.

At Oluwu market in Epe, one of several wildlife markets, wild animals are sold daily.

Meat sellers insist wildlife meat is safe despite fears that coronavirus originated from the wildlife market in the Chinese city, Wuhan.

A BBC report said cane rats (grass cutters), snakes, antelopes, hedgehogs, lizards, crocodiles and pangolins were on display.

In recent months, sales have plummeted due lockdown restrictions.

Oluwu market has been selling wildlife meat (bush meat) for decades. A spokesperson for the Lagos governor said there is no policy in place to ban wildlife markets.(FA)
