TEHRAN - Iran is readying for a war with Israel while also trying to avoid one, Iranian officials have said.

It comes as the Islamic Republic braces for Israel’s promised response to its missile attack earlier this month.

The sources told The New York Times that Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, Iran’s supreme leader, has ordered his military to prepare several plans to respond to an Israeli attack.

The officials, including members of Iran’s Revolutionary Guards, said that Iran will attack if Israel strikes its oil and energy infrastructure or nuclear facilities, or assassinates its leaders.

However, they said, Iran might not act if Israel only targets a limited number of military sites and weapons depots.
