Trump in Paris for Bastille Day
Paris - President Donald Trump is in France to take part in Bastille Day celebrations and commemorations of the entry 100 years ago of US troops into World War One. Mr Trump was welcomed in a ceremony at Les Invalides followed by a meeting at the Élysée Palace. Analysts say President Macron appears to be taking on the role of Trump ally in Europe as German Chancellor Angela Merkel shows public distaste for the US President. The pair will watch Amercan troops with French allies in an annual parade, to mark 100 years since the US intervened in the First World War. A White House official said Trump and Macron would discuss the civil war in Syria, where Islamic State is defending its last major urban stronghold of Raqqa, and counter-terrorism. Macron's aides say he does not want Trump to feel backed into a corner. "What Emmanuel Macron wants to do is bring Trump back into the circle so that the United States, which remains the world's number one power, is not excluded," French government spokesman Christophe Castaner told BFM TV.
