PARIS - French president Macron has told the Economist that alliance is in brain death, while warning European countries that they can no longer rely on America to defend its allies.

Macron has warned that the power of NATO is eroding because the US is “turning its back” on allies.

The US-led military bloc “only works if the guarantor of last resort functions as such,” the French leader noted told The Economist in an interview, published on Wednesday.

“I’d argue that we should reassess the reality of what NATO is in the light of the commitment of the United States.”
