THE HAGUE/BERNE - The Netherlands and Switzerland have both reportedly said they will suspend contributions to UNRWA, the UN’s agency for Palestine refugees, following media revelations earlier this week that top officials, including Commissioner-General Pierre Krähenbühl, are under investigation for alleged ethics violations, including “abuses of authority for personal gain, to suppress legitimate dissent and to otherwise achieve their personal objectives”. The Swiss government said it had already given its annual contribution to the agency but would be holding off on any further donations for the time being, while the Dutch foreign ministry said it was pausing its yearly contribution of $14.5 million until it has “received a satisfactory response from the UN” on what the organisation plans to do with the outcome of the ethics investigation.
