New York - A speeding vehicle has struck at least 14 pedestrians on a sidewalk in New York City's Times Square, killing one person and seriously injuring another. Police have taken a suspect into custody.
The New York Police Department closed off the area after the collisions occurred on on Thursday, just before noon, at the corner of 45th Street and Broadway. At least ten people people were being treated for injuries on the ground after the collision at the Midtown Manhattan tourist site, the FDNY confirmed on Twitter. One person was seriously injured. A photograph taken by one witness showed a maroon sedan, wreathed in steam or smoke, propped up on bollards. One dead victim - a woman - was seen lying on the sidewalk, her face covered with a sheet. Others, sprawled on the sidewalk, were being tended to by first responders and other pedestrians. At least seven were being seen loaded onto stretchers, a witness said. The 26-year-old suspect has a history of drunk-driving incidents and he was 'visually impaired' according to officers on the scene, they reported. He was heading in the wrong direction up Seventh Avenue when he mounted the kerb and began striking pedestrians. New York Governor Andrew Cuomo is on his way to Times Square to assess the situation and is expected to arrive later in the afternoon, NBC reported.(FA)
